While I was on vacation in California last month, I needed some quick and easy crochet projects to take on the go. This led me to design a simple crochet scrunchie pattern that takes under 30 minutes to make.  Since there was a lot of interest on Instagram and Facebook, I’ve written it up as a pattern with a quick photo tutorial!  This quick and easy crochet scrunchie pattern is worked in the round as a tube and joined around a hair tie to make it stretchy.  These would be perfect for gifts or market prep, and they use less than 15 yards of yarn so they’re a great stash buster!

The free pattern is below, and you can purchase a low cost ad-free PDF in my shop here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/darci-scrunchie

What you need: (If you make a purchase from one of these links, I will receive a small commission at no cost to you)
– 10-15 yards of DK or worsted weight yarn (https://amzn.to/2LLloIR)
– Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook (https://amzn.to/2LLjtEc)
– Tapestry needle (https://amzn.to/2IFM8qB)
– Scissors
– Elastic hair tie (https://amzn.to/2LKnQiM)

Abbreviations used:
rep = repeat
st(s) = stitch(es)
csc = center single crochet
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
WS = wrong side
RS = right side

Helpful hints:
– This pattern uses the csc stitch to create a “knit” look. This stitch is worked almost the same as a normal sc. The only difference is the hook is inserted between the “v” of the stitch instead of just in the top two loops.
– Working in regular sc will create the exact same shape, with a slightly different texture.
– When working into the ch, sc into the back bump instead of the top two loops. This will make it easier to join at the end.
– After Round 1, all rounds are worked in spiral, so you will not ch 1 at the beginning and join at the end.

Instructions:
Ch 45 and join with a sl st in the first ch, being careful not to twist the ch.
Round 1: ch 1, sc in same ch and in each ch around
Rounds 2-15: csc in each st around

Assembly-

The piece should look like this.

Turn the piece inside out so the WS is facing you and place the elastic hair tie around the middle.

Flip up the bottom section so your hook is in position to continue around and the edges are aligned (RS should be facing you again).

Begin slip stitching around the edges.

Start by inserting the hook into the next st of the side the yarn is attached to and into the first starting ch. This will ensure the scrunchie doesn’t twist.

Once you have slip stitched all the way around, join with a sl st in the first sl st, and fasten off.  Weave in the end by poking it into the scrunchie and out the other side. Cut it off as close as possible so it disappears into the scrunchie.
